51Mv2bQkqFL“Slow Hand” by Victoria Vane ( Link –http://issuu.com/btsemag/docs/nov-dec-2014/49 )

In rural Montana … Wade Knowlton is a hardworking lawyer who’s torn between his small-town Montana law practice and a struggling family ranch. He’s on the brink of exhaustion from trying to save everybody and everything, when gorgeous Nicole Powell walks into his office. She’s a damsel in distress and the breath of fresh air he needs.

Even the lawyers wear boots …Nicole Powell is a sassy Southern girl who has officially sworn off cowboys after a spate of bad seeds-until her father’s death sends her to Montana and into the arms of a man who seems too good to be true. Her instincts tell her to high tail it out of Montana, but she can’t resist a cowboy with a slow hand…

 ————

Excerpt:

“Don’t you have to be in court soon, Counselor?” she reminded him in a voice that came out breathless.

“Yeah, I do,” he replied. “Guess I got a bit sidetracked. You’re turning out to be a big distraction, you know that?”

She bit her lip. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be such an imposition.”

“I said a distraction not an imposition. There’s a big difference. I didn’t realize until now just how badly I’ve needed such a distraction.” He stepped away with a reluctant sigh.

Her pulse still hammering in anticipation, Nikki exhaled the breath she hadn’t realized was trapped in her chest.

Wade spun toward his office. “Help yourself to the phone and anything else while I get cleaned up.” He paused again on the threshold. “Of course, you’re welcome to use my office if you need greater privacy.” He added over his shoulder with a look of devilment. “Or in the event any wild impulse overtakes you while I shower.”

He went to work on his shirt buttons. His collar was soon wide open revealing a generous show of muscular chest that make her hands itch to rip it off him. She diverted her gaze and curled her itchy hands by her sides.

“Have no fear, cowboy,” Nikki replied in a tone meant to disguise the warm flush that had come over her. “I corralled all my wild impulses long ago.”

“Did you, now?” He still stood in doorway, head cocked. “Somehow, I think you may have missed a few strays.”

“Maybe I need to make myself clearer. I have an aversion to cocky cowboys.”

Just keep telling yourself that, Nikki. Maybe if you repeat it often enough it’ll become true.

“Is that so?” His brows flew upward. “I can’t say I ever met a woman with an actual aversion to me.”

“Don’t take it personally. It’s nothing against you in particular, but to your type.”

“And what do you think you know about my type?”

“Since I don’t have a pole handy, enough to keep you at arm’s length. Besides that, this whole line of conversation is entirely inappropriate in light of professional ethics, don’t you think? You are my attorney, after all.”

“Well, darlin’”—he scratched his unshaven jaw—“there’s a little hitch to that.”

“What do you mean? You said you’d help me.”

“And I will, but you can’t engage my professional services until I know who you are.”

“I’ve told you who I am!” she insisted.

“Sweetheart, I’m a lawyer, and according to the law, your claim don’t weigh without authentication.”

“Authentication?”

“Proof.”

“So what are you saying? That you don’t believe me?”

“I’m not saying that at all. Only that our professional relationship will commence once you get your ID. In the interim”—his gaze slid over her in a way that threatened to melt her insides—“you’d best find yourself a nice, long, sturdy pole.”

Logline:   Jarian Martin, a former artist, is a compassionate young man who has dedicated his life to helping others.  As the troubles of a difficult past strike closer to home, the life he must fight to save is just as important to him as his own…

Excerpt:

It had been an ordinary Friday after school event for fifteen year-old Jarian Martin while he stood out by the football field waiting for his neighbor and best friend, Andy Hansen to appear. He had already been threatened with his usual daily ass-kicking from Bobby Clark in the library during last period. After the bell rang, he escaped his nemesis’s wrath with a clever short cut through the back doors of the gym, and ran the rest of the way to where he finally stopped to wait. Andy eventually would show up, happy and smiling about some date he had with one of the hottest girls in school for the movies later that night. Bobby would be on his heels, pissing and moaning about Jarian being picked over him to escort that girl’s equally sexy best friend. The only thing that kept Bobby for beating the hell out of him right there on the field was the sudden arrival of Andy’s big brother, Tony. Tony was the big brother Jarian wished he always had.   In the end, Bobby Clark would get the hot date after all, because Jarian knew better than to even ask. His mom would say “no,” and in his house, her word was always the final rule.

* * *

Later in the night an unforeseen horror had Jarian sitting fearfully quiet, crouched in the darkest corner of his lonesome upstairs bedroom. He couldn’t remember how long he had been there, not that it mattered, but at least for the moment he felt he was safe. The low hum of central air coming up through the floor vent beside him was the only sound in the house next to the pop radio station playing on the stereo downstairs. Only his heart was beating loudest, he thought. Though the air from the vent was cool, hot beads of sweat poured from him like a waterfall down and across his bruised and aching face. In an attempt to brush the water from his eyes he discovered that his hands were soiled with grit and the once soft pinkness of his palms were now scraped and scarred with blood and dirt from end to end.  The damage to his face and hands were small in comparison to what all that had happened to him.

* * *

Eight years later a phantom itch to a tiny knife scar on his top-left shoulder would hardly register to Jarian as he made his way in life.  As a college student and crisis center volunteer, his hands were always full in concern for others, especially his roommate and childhood bestfriend, Andy Hansen, whose own life has spiraled into addiction.  After years of struggling with Andy’s situation, Jarian is finally forced to take action.  What he comes to find is in order to save one life, he may have to start with his own…

“SANCTUM ANGELS” – EDENMARY BLACK

Synopsis:

When Priana Grey walks into a bank, she isn’t expecting to be taken hostage by a violent thief; nor, is she expecting Detective Joe Cafaris to offer his life for hers. The stepdaughter of fallen angels of the Sanctum, she has concealed her true nature to move among humans for years, but Joe’s courage astounds her. Although she knows that falling in love with a human is a disaster, she just can’t ignore what she feels.

Joe is a tough loner, cool in the most dangerous situations, but he’s not ready for the scorching desire he feels for Priana. He has a million logical reasons to walk away, but his heart wants something else.

Priana’s stepbrother, Keirc, warns that she’ll find only misery with Joe, yet he guards a perilous secret of his own. His lover, Iridea, is the daughter of Sebastien Galaurus, a ruthless vampire who leads the Demesne, a powerful supernatural haven quite unlike the Sanctum.

When a stunning crisis forces Priana into the heart of the Demesne, a maelstrom explodes in the shadow of supernatural havens on the brink of war, where fallen angels, vampires, weres and daemons call the shots and humans are viewed as critically frail – a place where men and supernaturals can die.

My Review:

This was one of the most amazing debut novels I have read since joining my fellow book lovers in reviewing the works of some of the best indie authors around.  From the very beginning I truly loved how the story opened up with a simple act of going to the bank that leads into the incredible lives of some of the most amazing characters, human and non-human, alike.  The story was easy to follow as the author carefully walked me through the hearts and minds of each individual without over-describing every little thing, and yet filled my mind with perfect visuals of everything going on.  The emotions that poured from these pages are unquestionably realistic and I couldn’t help to find some sort of bond or understanding to each person I met, including the bad ones.  This novel did not miss a beat in every heart pounding sensual moment, especially those shared between true loves, and was not short on words to describe every kiss, touch, or taste that was experienced within.  The underlining stories of various issues of good and bad kept me on the edge of my seat with wonder as to how everything would come full circle and I was not disappointed.  As an adult paranormal romance, I have to say that “Sanctum Angels” is an absolute must-read novel with a triumphant start to a brand new series that will blow you away.
